The  Wamunyu are famous all over the world for their unique carving talents. History has it that they learnt carving from the Makonde a tribe of gifted carvers from Tanzania,in during the First World War .Mutisya Munge a soldier for the British colonial army learnt the art of wood carving from the Makonde. On his return to Wamunyu in Ukambani,Mutisya continued to carve and invent new designs .He shared his knowledge with his family and some friends who took to carving as work .He later died in 1927,and being a polygamist he left  behind five wives and seven sons.Twenty years later carving started being sold in other countries of Eastern Africa and extended to Central Africa and eventually to all over the world.


Wamunyu handcraft society was formed in the year 1965 with the main aim of marketing Kenya's image abroad through curios that depict the country's environment. This objective was to be achieved through the sale of these items to foreigners,especially tourists who visit the Country’s National Parks and Historical Sites.The 2060 – member strong Wamunyu handcraft society boasts of the most talent wood carvers,jewelery and other related works in East and Central Africa.

Several of the society's artifacts such as the three legged stools are found in prestigious institutions like,the British museum and the Nairobi national museum.The articles are curved by imaginative members of the society whose artistic skills have won great admiration from those who have had the oppportunity to buy the society's products.
